The journey from injury to recovery
A coordinated pathway supporting students from early identification through to safe participation.
1. Injury Identification
A head injury is identified at school, during sport, or in the community. Parents/caregivers are notified that this event has occurred and if they consent to further steps being taken.
2. Initial triage and medical review
The school nurse or appropriate staff member initiates the pathway. An online medical assessment helps determine whether the pathway is appropriate.
3. Education and early recovery
The student and whānau receive concussion education and guidance for a gradual return to learning and everyday activity, supported by Headsmart Schools resources.
4. Screening
Where applicable, a structured screening interview and physical assessment help identify students who may be at risk of persistent symptoms or require further support.
5. Specialist CATCH assessment
Students requiring additional input can access the Concussion Assessment and Triage Community Hub (CATCH), with medical specialist review and multidisciplinary assessment.
6. Individualised recovery plan
The student and whānau are provided with individualised recovery plan and support from the wider multidisciplinary team.
7. Safe return to participation
Progress is monitored, with appropriate clinical guidance for returning to school activities, physical activity, and sport.
This programme does not replace immediate or emergency care. Students with suspected serious head injuries or emergency warning signs require urgent medical assessment.
Important Safety Message
Auckland Neurorehabilitation Specialists are accredited ACC concussion service providers. Eligible student-facing clinical services may be funded through existing ACC concussion pathways, including medical specialist, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and psychology input where clinically indicated.
The programme aims to reduce financial barriers to accessing appropriate concussion care for eligible students and their whānau.
